Winger Woman Named 60th Princess Kay

ST. PAUL, Minn. (WCCO/AP) -- A 20-year-old college student from northwestern Minnesota has been crowned the 60th Princess Kay of the Milky Way.

Polk County representative MarJenna McWilliam of Winger was crowned Wednesday night at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds. She'll serve as the official goodwill ambassador for nearly 4,000 Minnesota dairy farmers for the next year.

McWilliam attends North Dakota State University, where she majors in English education.

County dairy princesses from across Minnesota competed for the Princess Kay title. Rachael Rostad of Wanamingo, representing Goodhue County, and Katie Schmitt of Rice, representing Benton County, were runners-up.

McWilliam's first official duty as Princess Kay was to sit in a rotating cooler in the Dairy Building on opening day of the Minnesota State Fair.

Linda Christensen, the sculpture, carved McWilliam's likeness on a 90-pound block of butter. The butter comes from a distributor in New Ulm.

Each day, a new contestant – 12 in total – spends 8 hours in the spinning booth in cold temperatures.

The ladies get to take their sculpture home after the fair.
