What In The World Is 'Nickle Dickle Day'?

WACONIA, Minn. (WCCO) -- When it comes to weekend family fun, you can't go wrong with classic cars, a mechanical bull, and duck races. You'll find those things and much more in downtown Waconia on Saturday.

This year marks the 52nd of the annual festival called Nickle Dickle Day. It runs from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday.

It began as a way for Waconia business leaders to attract people to downtown to spend money, and later became full blown festival.

"There's such a variety of things to do. It's such a great day," said Kellie Sites, of the Waconia Chamber of Commerce. "

The day also features 5K and 10K runs, as well as a classic car show. Sites said there should be hundreds of vintage models on hand.

But why the name? Sites said the word "dickle" is derived from a German word for bartering, which ties into how the day began. She said the name does tend to tie tongues.

"And then when you get into the Nickle Dickle Pickle Contest, it's a whole 'nother thing," she said.

Roughly 30,000 people are expected at the fest.
