Police: Man Standing In Bemidji Road Killed By Car

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – A 54-year-old man died over the weekend in Bemidji after being hit by a car while standing on a road's center dividing line in the early morning hours, police say.

Bemidji Police Chief Mike Mastin said Andrew Willard Reed, of Bemidji, died minutes before 5 a.m. Sunday. He suffered "a significant head injury," and was found lying in the northbound lane of Paul Bunyan Drive South. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the car, Floyd LaDuke of Bemidji, tried to help Reed after the incident, and called police. He told authorities he was driving north on Paul Bunyan Drive and didn't see Reed, who was standing on the road's dividing line, wearing dark-colored clothes.

LaDuke showed no sign of impairment, Mastin said. And a breath test showed no alcohol in his system.

Police say charges are not being pursued at this time.

As to why Reed was in the road, police gave no reason.
