Federal Courts Stay Open If Government Closes
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- The federal court in Minnesota wants you to know the judiciary will continue normal operations in the event of a government shutdown.
About 800,000 federal workers could be furloughed beginning Tuesday if Congress fails to approve a temporary spending bill to keep the government running.
The U.S. District Court in Minnesota says all cases, including civil and criminal jury trials, will be heard as scheduled. The clerk's office will remain open as well.
A memo from the administrative office of the United States Courts says federal courts will continue to operate for at least 10 business days in the event of a shutdown using fees and other funds. But after that, only essential work would continue and each court would determine what staff is needed.
