Suspect In Custody After Babbitt Suspicious Death

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Police in northeastern Minnesota say a suspect is in custody after a man died Monday after being found unconscious on a road near the suspect's home.

The Babbitt Police Department announced Tuesday that 24-year-old Shawn Russel Doherty was in Virginia Jail, booked for 2nd degree intentional homicide.

Officers arrested him Monday after responding to his home on 37 Astor Road, where a man was found unconscious in the road. An ambulance brought the unconscious man, identified as 55-year-old Paul John Bulen of Mahtomedi, to Ely Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police said they found his death suspicious.

On Tuesday, the St. Louis County Medical Examiner performed an autopsy on Bulen, police said. The results showed he was strangled to death.

Babbitt is about a 100 miles northeast of Duluth.
