Dayton Pushes Mid-March Deadline For Tax Votes

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Gov. Mark Dayton is urging final action by mid-March on a package of tax breaks and the repeal of some recently adopted business taxes.

That's a quick turnaround in a Minnesota legislative session that began Tuesday. The package has stronger support in the House than the Senate.

An estimated $500 million in lost revenue from the tax changes would come out of a state surplus.

The tax breaks are for income tax filers who benefit from some preferences on the federal level that they don't get on state forms. The preferences would apply to 2013 tax filings.

The business taxes are sales taxes applied to select services, such as equipment repair and warehousing. The warehousing portion isn't due to take hold until April 1 so lawmakers could head it off.
