Mike's Mix: Cucumber Rouge

Every Friday, Mike Augustyniak picks up a new cocktail recipe from a local mixologist. Throughout April, Mike's picking up some elegant recipes from the Loring neighborhood's esteemed Café & Bar Lurcat. This week's selection is a gin cocktail that should please even those who think gin is not the spirit for them.

Ingredients
1 1/2 oz. Hendrick's gin
1 oz. orange juice
1 oz. house mix (recipe below)
1/2 oz. Lillet Rouge
drop of Grenadine (for color)

Lurcat's 'House Mix' (yields 1 quart)
6 oz. lime juice
4 oz. lemon juice
8 oz. simple syrup
14 oz. water

Directions
Pour gin and juice over a lowball glass filled with ice. Finish with Lillet Rouge and grenadine. Garnish with a cucumber slice.

Taste Test
This is a gin drink for non-gin drinkers – try this one even if you're not a fan of the juniper flavor of gin. Hendricks was one of the first infused gins to market, and is easily the most recognizable cucumber-infused gins out there. It pairs well with the citrus and almost port-like sweetness of the Lillet Rouge.

About Coup d'Etat
Café & Bar Lurcat has been called one of the best summer patios in the cities as well as the best wine bar by City Pages. It also earned wine honors from Food and Wine as well as Wine Enthusiast.
