Sheriff: German Man Died In Lake Superior Crash
DULUTH, Minn. (AP) — Authorities in northeastern Minnesota say the pilot who died when his plane crashed into Lake Superior last weekend was from Germany.
The St. Louis County sheriff's office identifies the man as 47-year-old Alexander Georg Obersteg of Steinfeld, Germany.
While an official identification has not been made, items found during the investigation lead officials to believe Obersteg was the sole victim and owner of the single-engine airplane.
Authorities believe Obersteg was leaving the Duluth International Airport on Saturday en route to Goose Bay, Labrador, with an ultimate destination of Steinfeld.
An autopsy ruled out the possibility of a medical emergency contributing to the crash. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
Divers recovered Obersteg's body on Monday. Plans are being made to recover the rest of the plane wreckage.
