Zebra Mussels Discovered In West Metro Lake

MINNETONKA, Minn. (AP) -- Officials confirm that zebra mussels have been found in another lake in the western Twin Cities.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and the Minnehaha Creek Watershed District say the invasive pest was found in Lake Virginia.

Last month, a volunteer checking water levels found a zebra mussel on floating vegetation near the public access on Lake Virginia. The access is located near a channel that connects to Lake Minnetonka, which is infested with zebra mussels.

DNR staff say Lake Virginia will be designated as infested.

Officials say finding the zebra mussel in Lake Virginia was not unexpected, because of the lake's connection to Lake Minnetonka, which has been infested with zebra mussels since 2010.
