ALS Association Puts Ice Buckets Aside In Annual Fundraising Walk

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) - Saturday morning, more than 3,000 people went beyond the ice bucket challenge and instead walked to defeat ALS.

The walk is the ALS Association's biggest annual event.

It raises money to allow local chapters to maintain care services and support research for much of the next year.

ALS is a disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord.

WCCO spoke to one man who's currently going through this battle.

"It's important for everyone living with ALS, for the awareness and the money, money raised through this event," he said. "This is just a great day, wonderful day to get everyone and celebrate people living with ALS and honor those who died."

This year the goal was to raise $370,000.

And they far exceeded that goal, raising more than $490,000.
