Independence Party Ticket Makes TV Ad Play

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Five Independence Party candidates are trying to capture some political attention with a joint commercial made to come off like a movie trailer.

The 30-second spot for "The Independents" hit the air Thursday features the party's nominees for governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general, secretary of state and auditor. Each gets a nickname like "the new girl" for governor candidate Hannah Nicollet and the "the whistleblower" for auditor candidate Pat Dean.

The IP is a major party in Minnesota but has struggled for attention this year.

The commercial began airing in Rochester and Mankato broadcast and cable markets but will soon hit cable stations around the Twin Cities.

Nicollet says the ads recognize that "politics can be boring," and she hopes a novel approach will spread fast on the Internet.
