Fall Cold Can't Deter Minnesotans From Outdoor Fun

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- The chill in the air is serious, but it wasn't cold enough to stop some people from heading outdoors for fun.

A week ago Friday, the temperatures reminded us of summer. Short pants and tank tops were in order, and outside is where everyone spent their morning, afternoon and evening. It was a Top 10 Weather Day.

The difference between then and now is about 40 degrees.

Chilly temperatures didn't keep true North High Polar fans from helping its football team win a Minneapolis city championship.

"A lot of people said they weren't coming because it was cold outside," said Edison High School student Dalene Stave.

Even North's cheerleaders were all about warmth, sporting hats and gloves during the homecoming game.

And the chill in the air didn't stop some from enjoying what the calendar claims is fall. Golfers were scarce, but those who did venture out had the entire fairway to themselves at Theodore Wirth.

For others, the dip in temperature did not matter -- it was the wind they were after.

"We have to use the wind today," said windsurfer Arlo Ledergerber. "It's like getting colder, colder, colder -- soon the lake will be frozen."

The white caps on Lake Calhoun were perfect for those who were determined to windsurf one more time this season.

"No this isn't perfect," said Jonathan Townsend. "What, 85, sunny, wind about 40, 30, somewhere in that. That's perfect, but this will do, you know. We'll take it."

Enjoy this cold October night while you can. Remember -- this won't seem so bad when those seriously cold days return.

A lot of people I spoke with opted for the safe Friday night, free of goosebumps and shivers.

Movie theatres, bowling alleys and gyms were packed Friday.
