Gophers Win Ice Breaker Tournament To Start Season 2-0

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – The University of Minnesota men's hockey team, ranked No. 1 in preseason polls, got the 2014-15 season off to a 2-0 at the Ice Breaker Tournament at the University of Notre Dame.

The Gophers beat Minnesota-Duluth 4-3 Friday afternoon and claimed the tournament title with a 3-0 win over RPI on Sunday. It's the second straight year the Gophers have won the Ice Breaker Tournament.

Adam Wilcox earned his 53rd career victory in net for Minnesota, stopping all 22 shots he faced in the shutout on Sunday. Minnesota outshot RPI 34-22 in the contest. The Gophers took the early lead when Seth Ambroz tipped in a shot from Mike Reilly less than six minutes into the first period.

Hudson Fasching scored less than two minutes into the second period to give Minnesota a 2-0 lead on assists from Ryan Collins and Connor Reilly. Connor Reilly added a power-play goal at the 7:37 mark of the third period on assists from Mike Reilly and Kyle Rau for a 3-0 lead.

The Gophers are off until Oct. 24-25, when they host Bemidji State in their opening series at Mariucci Arena.
