Simon Pushes For Early Voting In Minnesota

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Democratic secretary of state candidate Steve Simon wants Minnesota to join the 33 states that allow early voting.

Simon says it would ease congestion at polling places and expand on the state's new no-excuse absentee voting law, which he helped pass. More than 111,000 absentee ballots have been requested this year, but Simon says early voting would assure voters their ballots are counted. Absentee ballots aren't examined until Election Day.

Simon unveiled his proposal Wednesday in St. Paul. He also wants to give Minnesotans a clearer option to register to vote while renewing or applying for a driver's license or state ID.

Republican candidate Dan Severson has proposed a system in which voters can voluntarily show photo ID to go through a faster line to cast a ballot.
