DPS: 8,000+ Motorists Cited For Not Being Belted In October

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – More than 8,000 motorists were cited for not wearing their seat belts during a 16-day campaign in October, according to the Minnesota Department of Public Safety.

A preliminary report showed that 8,080 drivers and passengers were cited from Oct. 10 to 26 for not wearing their seat belts in the "Click It or Ticket" campaign. Officials said 333 law enforcement agencies in Minnesota participated in the campaign. Also, in addition to the seat belt violations, there were more than 200 citations for improperly secured child seats.

The same campaign last year netted nearly 8,300 seat belt citations and 341 tickets for child seat violations.

A recent survey found that so far this year, nearly 73 percent of children are properly secured in child booster seats. That number is up from 64.1 percent three years ago.
