St. Paul Schools Create Winter Cancellation Policy
ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) -- St. Paul public schools have announced a plan for cancelling classes during extreme winter temperatures.
The St. Paul School District said Wednesday that classes will be called off if the National Weather Service forecast at 6 a.m. predicts an air temperature below minus 25 or a wind chill of 40 below zero. Officials say they will make the decision no later than 6:30 p.m. the night before school.
A district spokeswoman tells the St. Paul Pioneer Press that cancellation criteria were more ambiguous last year without a specified threshold. Schools were closed for six days last winter due to low temperatures.
The district plans to decide whether to cancel school due to snow or ice by 5 a.m. that day.
Families will be notified by phone, text and email.
