Target To Open Doors Even Earlier Thanksgiving Day

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Target announced Monday that its stores will open even earlier -- 6 p.m. -- on Thanksgiving Day this year.

It's part of the store's early access to its Black Friday deals. Target also announced a one-day only access to Black Friday deals on Nov. 10 and a pre-sale on Nov. 26. The store chain has already announced that it will offer free online shipping through Dec. 20.

Dave Vang, a professor of finance at the University of St. Thomas, said this year a lot of retailers will open their doors at 6 p.m. Thanksgiving night. Macy's has already followed suit.

"This is a non-stop trend. It's going to be getting pretty much worse and worse every single year. A lot of it has to do with competition," Vang said.

While many companies are opening earlier than ever, many companies have refused to open on Thanksgiving, including Costco, DSW, GameStop, Home Depot, Lowe's, Marshalls, Nordstrom and many more.

Target says it is working with its employees to understand scheduling preferences and says all hourly team members who work on Thanksgiving will have pay equal to time and a half their hourly rate – with some working certain shifts getting additional pay on top of holiday premium pay.
