MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Zebra mussels have gotten a bad rap for invading area lakes.

Now, a local brewery is putting the invasive species to good use!

Call it an IPA — or an Invasive Pale Ale.

Excelsior Brewing Company is launching the new ale made with invasive zebra mussel shells pulled fresh from Lake Minnetonka.

It’s called Milfoil Lakehouse Saison Ale, and the company touts its “exotic, invasive flavor.”

The brew is also made with hops, honey and wild rice.

Zebra mussels have spread into nearly 200 lakes, rivers and streams in Minnesota and Eurasian Milfoil has invaded even more waterways.
