Minnesotans Bundle Up During Arctic Blast

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Many people who have returned to work following the Christmas holiday faced a chilly walk to work Tuesday morning in downtown Minneapolis.

They were bundled up as they hurried along to get relief inside where it's warm.

"Just trying to wear a hat, gloves and everything," said Mark Marotz. "I kind of wish I had a scarf right now, but I'm just trying to move fast."

Leon Markhasin also dressed in layers.

"Really warm pants with padding and T-shirt, sweatshirt," he said. "Plus, I'm listening to music, so I'm distracting myself as I go on."

On the other hand, there are others, like Jim Peterson, who are not bothered by the brutal temperatures.

"This is Minnesota," he said. "This is why we live here."

The Red Cross recommends wearing layers of lightweight clothing to make it through the frigid weather.

They add that gloves and a hat will prevent people from losing body heat.

Most importantly, people are urged to be aware of the symptoms associated with hypothermia.

If you experience confusion, dizziness or severe shivering, seek medical attention.

If you have pets, don't forget to bring them indoors or make sure they have enough shelter to keep them warm outside.

Experts say you should also set your thermostat at the same temperature day and night to help avoid freezing pipes.
