Lawyers For Minnesota Terror Suspect Propose Civics Program

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Attorneys for a man accused of trying to travel to Syria to join the Islamic State group are proposing he be free pending trial if he agrees to participate in a course promoting civic involvement.

The attorneys say their plan would guarantee public safety while 18-year-old Abdullahi Yusuf's case is pending.

A nonprofit called Heartland Democracy would run the program.

Prosecutors filed papers Thursday asking that Yusuf remain in custody. A hearing on the issue that was scheduled for Friday has been postponed and a new date wasn't immediately set.

Yusuf is charged with conspiracy to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization. He was arrested in November, months after he was stopped at the Minneapolis airport.
