MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — A Twin Cities woman was President Obama’s guest at the State of the Union address Tuesday night.

Rebekah Erler wrote the president last year about how tough the economy has been on her family.

She sat with First Lady Michele Obama Tuesday night as the president singled out her and her husband, Ben, for their resilience.

“She and Ben are working as hard as ever, but they’ve had to forgo vacations and a new car so that they can pay off student loans and save for retirement,” President Obama said. “Basic childcare for Jack and Henry cost more than their mortgage, and almost as much as a year at the University of Minnesota. Like millions of hard-working Americans, Rebekah isn’t asking for a handout, but she is asking that we look for more ways to help families get ahead.”

The Erlers live in St. Anthony.
