DFL Senator Clears One Conflict Hurdle In New Job

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Minnesota's campaign finance watchdog says a Democratic senator's new job heading a lobbying group doesn't necessarily conflict with his role as a lawmaker.

The Campaign Finance and Public Disclosure Board said in a draft advisory opinion released Tuesday that Sen. David Tomassoni may face a conflict of interest on specific votes or actions. But the board says holding both jobs doesn't meet the strict criteria for a conflict under laws it governs.

Tomassoni was hired earlier this month as executive director of the Range Association of Municipalities and Schools, an Iron Range lobbying group. The Chisholm Democrat's hiring quickly prompted backlash from Republicans who called it a clear conflict.

Tomassoni has insisted the dual roles are fine but requested an outside look at the urging of Senate Democrat leaders.
