Nye's Gets Squeezed In Proposed Apartment Design

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Legendary Minneapolis bar Nye's Polonaise Room will be getting the accordion treatment in a proposed plan submitted by developer Schafer Richardson.

Renderings released by ESG Architects show that two of the three buildings that make up Nye's will be included in the proposed 29-story apartment tower situated above the bar, according to the Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal.

The building that has been the bar's main entrance since 1950 -- and featured the piano bar -- will be removed, including the iconic A-frame sign featuring Frédéric Chopin seated at a piano.

The two other buildings on each side – the old bar and the Polonaise Room, built in 1905 and 1907 respectively – will then be pushed together.

Minneapolis' Heritage Preservation Commission will meet next week to discuss the proposal.

Nye's is expected to close late this summer after 65 years in operation.
