Dog Sniffs Way To Find Cedar Rapids Hospital Where Owner Was

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (WCCO/AP) -- A woman who was staying at a Cedar Rapids hospital for complications stemming from an earlier surgery got a surprise visitor.

The family dog Sissy ran away from home and traveled all the way to Mercy Medical Center, where Nancy Franck was staying.

Last Saturday, her husband discovered their miniature schnauzer Sissy was gone from their residence, which is at about 20 blocks away from the hospital.

A hospital security guard used Sissy's tags to call Franck's husband, Dale. He said Sissy was on a mission to see her mom but simply couldn't find the right elevator to take.

The family is still perplexed on how Sissy sniffed her way to the hospital. But they think she might've knew her way around from car trips in dropping Nancy Franck off for work next door.

"I was surprised to see her. She was all wiggling and excited and I said, 'Sarah, did you smuggle this dog in?' And she said, 'No, she brought herself in here, Mom,'" Franck said. "It was surprising that she could get away from her home and walk all the way down there."

Sissy was only at the hospital for a few minutes before being taken back home. Hospital employees broke the rules and let her stay there for a bit.
