Man Sentenced For Attempted Murder Of Minnesota Deputy

ADA, Minn. (AP) — A Crookston man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for attempted murder for shooting a Norman County sheriff's deputy who was wearing a bulletproof vest.

Steven Henderson pleaded guilty and got the maximum sentence. Court documents say Henderson shot a .45-caliber pistol as Deputy Nathan Warner arrested Henderson's brother on a warrant during a traffic stop last April. Warner was hit twice but was wearing a bulletproof vest and survived.

At Henderson's sentencing, KFGO-AM reports Judge Jeffrey Remick criticized Minnesota lawmakers. Remick says every police officer in the state should be offended that the maximum sentence in Minnesota is only 20 years for attempting to kill an officer.

Henderson's attorney asked for 14 years in prison.
