Late Season Storm Hits Twin Cities, Southern MN

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – After weeks of spring-like weather, Minnesotans got another shot of winter Sunday afternoon.

By Monday morning areas like Lakeville and Savage saw as much as nine inches. Our weather watcher David Curtis reported as much as 12 inches in Zumbrota, Minn.

The heaviest snow hit the Twin Cites metro around dinner time at a rate of around two inches per hour. Since temperatures were above freezing, much of the snow will melt on contact. This meant the snow only accumulated when it was falling heavily, which was good news for drivers and shovelers.

The Minnesota State Patrol said from 12 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., there were 164 crashes statewide. Of those, 20 involved injuries and there were no fatal or serious injury accidents. There were also 191 vehicles spun out or off the road.

Of the 164 crashes, 59 were in the Twin Cities metro and 13 involved injuries. Of the 191 vehicles off the road, 44 were in the metro.

Some flurries continues Monday morning, but by the afternoon all of Sunday's snow should be melted from the roads.

Looking ahead, the week's forecast is expected to have highs in the 40s, with a chance of rain/wet snow on Wednesday.
