Minneapolis Public Schools Cutting More Than 100 Jobs

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Minneapolis Public Schools has a plan to put more money into classrooms but it will impact more than 100 jobs.

This week, the district will begin sending layoff notices to about 120 staff members. All those affected work in the administrative offices at the Davis Center.

According to a district spokeswoman, this move comes as Minneapolis school officials plan the 2016 budget. She said the layoffs will save more than $11 million.

That money will then go into the district's schools. The plan is for all 76 schools to get some of that funding.

The money could be used for anything from reducing class sizes to lowering caseloads for special education officials. It could also mean that schools give more study time to middle and high school students.

However, the district has not said how much each school will get.

According to the Star Tribune, the money will not be divided evenly.

A breakdown of the re-allocation will come out at a later date.

So far, there's no word on how many teaching or instructional jobs this move will create.

If there are any new openings at these schools, staffers are encouraged to apply for these jobs.

The hope is that by redirecting funds, it will redirect teachers back into classrooms.

The district says most of the staff to be laid off will keep their jobs through June.
