Parade Of Homes Preview: Remodelers Showcase

EDINA (WCCO) -- Spring is just getting started, but the Parade of Homes tour is in its final week.

There's still time to see the Remodelers Showcase this weekend.

Our first stroll down the sidewalk takes us inside a year-long Linden Hills remodel in Minneapolis: Remodel No. 38: 3922 Beard Ave. S.

"It's kind of a life changer for the homeowners. They either have to move out or move upstairs," said Martha O'Hara Interiors Designer, Emily Welna, whose goals was to keep the old with the new in the 1930s home.

"We really want to make sure the two spaces meld together, we really wanted to make it look cohesive," Welna said.

Welna worked with her interior design partner, Jamie Meyer, as well Fred Nordahl Construction on creating the renovation. The family wanted to keep most of their old furniture and focus the spending on the remodel itself. The three level addition increased the size of the home significantly. The kitchen was moved to the add-on space and wood was used for the center island.

"Grey and white is really in right now," Welna said. "We actually accented with a wall paper. It's a small scale pattern with gray and white."

New to the home after the remodel was complete: kitchen, family room, and even a breakfast nook that opens up nicely to the family room. The design team challenged themselves to matching the matching archways and small details to then original structure of the home.

"It's nice to add a little bit of texture into the space," Emily said, who recommends pattern as a good option if making the primary color in the kitchen white.

From one banquette to another we go down the road for some breakfast in Edina.

"We didn't completely gut the whole house and start completely over," Ispiri Interior Designer, Becca Hall, said.

Hall used styles that appeal to all trends and updated colors in the kitchen and counter tops.

This 1960s style remodel took about three months, according to Hall. The kitchen, which used to be U-shaped, now includes an island 3-by-10 feet.

Address: 6208 Hansen Rd, Edina

Homeowners of the remodel: Nancy Polomis
Project: Great room/family room, kitchen and main level

This kitchen and main level remodel in Edina showcase how you can transform a 1960s floor plan to include better functionality.

"In this home we took out some major openings so that there was visibility from the front house to the back house," Hall said.

The built in banquette helped better utilize the space to help provide a nice comfortable start to family time around the table.

"As an interior designer we also help with space planning and fitting in the existing structure," Hall said.

The final remodel as done by a family who wanted a little bit of old and new.

"We kept the fireplace, because it was very important to the homeowner, who had a lot of childhood memories around it," Lori Balestri, Interior Designer with Vujovich Design Build, said.

Address: 5911 Dewey Hill Road, Edina

This Edina Colonial, which was built in 1978, features a new white kitchen with floor to ceiling cabinetry topped with rich Caesarstone counters as well as nice backsplash. Nearly the entire main level was renovated: family room, dining area, office, entry and stairs
