St. Cloud Phone Scam Continues, Caller Impersonating A Cop

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) - An apparent phone scam targeting foreign students at St. Cloud State University is continuing. The caller is now self-identifying as a police officer, providing a badge number and telling victims that they are going to be arrested.

Some students are also now receiving calls from 320-255-7200 -- the city of St. Cloud's main number, which does not make outbound calls -- and being asked to send a money order.

Last month, the St. Cloud Police Department said its front desk had taken several phone calls from citizens saying they are getting calls from the department's non-emergency number. Authorities said the calls were coming from one person claiming to be with the IRS.

The person was demanding money, and threatening students that if they don't pay, they will be arrested and expelled from school.

The St. Cloud Police Department is advising that if residents receive a call from that number, it is most likely a hoax.
