Rail Union Calls For 2-Person Crews On Every Train In MN

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Union railroad workers called for Minnesota legislators to pass laws requiring at least two-person crews on every train operating in the state.

The Smart Transportation Union said that would increase safety at rail crossings and railroad yards, where it said collisions and accidents are most likely to occur.

"It is essential that, in the state of Minnesota's interest, when we leave standing cars or trains, that we be able to properly secure the equipment," Philip Qualey said. "And that requires two people."

Rail freight traffic has increased significantly in recent years, particularly oil trains. The railroads say there are always at least two crew members on trains hauling hazardous material.
