Get Movin' Monday: Organize Your Closet

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Spring cleaning isn't fun -- especially that disorganized closet! In Minnesota, it's actually important to organize as we move season to season; otherwise you're stuck with sweaters on T-shirt days or vice versa!

So, we asked local stylist, Grant Whittaker, to help us out and get movin' on organizing this Monday.

A closet is like a puzzle. Whittaker says there are easy ways to piece it all together yourself.

"The main point of organizing your closet for anyone is visually you can see your pieces within a color family and it's easy to dig in and grab what you need," he said.

Start with your biggest pieces.

"I would put the coats to the forefront, and break it up, heavier coats, lighter coats," he said.

Then, any season you can grab and go.

Pants are also versatile pieces that should go up front and be divided by season by color coding your hangers: white =spring/summer, black=winter and white for those in-between trousers.

Then, stack your accent pieces, which should be staple pieces, like blazers and cardigans. Then layer your accessory pieces, like blouses and shirts, which might go underneath.

Don't be "matchy-matchy", but make it easy to create an outfit by keeping each staple or accessory in the same color family.

Athletic wear should come last in your closet and be put in a particular section, because that's what could be difficult if you're running out to the gym -- plus they're the items you're going to wash the most.
