Fmr. Gopher QB Philip Nelson To Play At South Alabama

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – A former Gopher quarterback is heading back to school and back to the football field.

Philip Nelson transferred to Rutgers after the 2013 season, but they kicked him off the team following a fight in Mankato that left former Mankato linebacker Isaac Kolstad with brain injuries.

Nelson plead guilty to a fifth degree assault and was sentenced to 100 hours of community service.

According to the Star Tribune, Nelson's father sent an email Thursday saying his son will now play for the University of South Alabama.

He still has two years of eligibility remaining and can compete this coming fall.

The school in Mobile, Ala. competes in the Football Bowl Subdivision or FBS.

Nelson played 19 games for the Gophers from 2012 to 2013.
