'U' Issues Crime Alert After 2 Women Robbed Near Campus

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- The University of Minnesota has issued a crime alert after two women were robbed near the East Bank campus early Thursday morning.

Minneapolis Police say the robbery happened at about 2:05 a.m. near the intersection of 8th Street Southeast and 14th Avenue Southeast.

The two victims -- one of which is a student -- say a man came out of the bushes near a home on 14th Avenue and demanded their valuables. He told them he had a gun, but did not show it to them.

The suspect took their purses and cellphones before fleeing westbound on 8th Street. The women were not injured during the robbery.

The women described the suspect as a black man with a dark complexion and shoulder-length hair worn in dreadlocks or cornrow. He is between 20 and 23 year old, stands between 5 feet 9 inches tall and 6 feet tall and has a medium build.

He was wearing dark jeans, a gray zip-up sweatshirt and black gloves.

Anyone with information about this crime is asked to call 911 or the Minneapolis Police tip line at 612-692-8477, and reference case number MP-15-172984.
