Where To Get Sweet Deals On National Donut Day

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – It's almost like Christmas in June!

Friday, June 5 is National Donut Day and, as you can imagine, bakeries across the Twin Cities are preparing.

And so have we! Friday we had Angel Food Bakery, SugaRush and Yo Yo Donuts to sample.

The folks at Angel Food Bakery in Minneapolis have been up baking all night trying to get ready for the day.

They told WCCO they see a big rush on the holiday!

So here's what you may not know about donuts.

During World War I, Salvation Army volunteers mixed up flour, lard and sugar and cooked the dough in soldiers' helmets.

They'd then serve them to the troops, as a morale booster.

The Salvation Army later went on to sell donuts to raise funds during the Great Depression.

So here's some Donut Day Deals!

Sarah Jane's Bakery in Northeast is offering a baker's dozen, that means there's 13 for the price of 12.

Glam Doll Donuts in South Minneapolis has created a special creation called Dani's Double Dee-Lite. That donut has peanut butter cream filling, fresh raspberry icing and is topped with peanut brittle.

Yo Yo Donuts in Minnetonka is handing one free donut per customer.
