MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — From a lifeguard shortage to Torii Hunter’s tantrum Wednesday night, here are the four stories to know for Thursday, June 11.

Lifeguard Shortage

Local pools are struggling to fill lifeguard positions to help keep swimmers safe.

It’s a lot of the same reasons we’ve seen in the past — people don’t want to be lifeguards because they think it’s too much pressure.

There are several days of required training- that can cost more than $100.

So, managers are trying to get creative. In Richfield, lifeguards will work longer, while pool attendants will be hired to regulate slide traffic.

Torii’s Tantrum

Let’s just say Torii Hunter was a little frustrated while playing Kansas City. Torii Hunter got tossed after a called third strike in the 8th inning.

Paul Molitor then also got ejected.

That’s when Torii throws his batting gloves, elbow pads, took off his jersey and stormed off the field.

Hunter may face a fine or suspension.

The Twins are no longer in first place after losing three in a row.

Young People & Binge Drinking

Young people aren’t binge drinking as much. Those aged 12 through 20 decreased their binge drinking rate by 6 percent.

However, a couple stats researchers also found: More than 20 percent of underage drinkers reported having some alcohol in the last 30 days. And 18- to 20-year-olds are binge drinking at similar rates to 20 years ago: 40 percent.

Female Astronaut Breaks Record

She’s getting her head out of the clouds after a record 200 days in space!

European Space Agency Astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti broke the record for the most time a woman has spent in space during a single mission.

She didn’t plan to break the record, she was supposed to come back May 12, but her mission was delayed.

The Italian will return to Earth Thursday.
