UND Trims List Of Potential Nicknames Down To 15
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- The University of North Dakota has trimmed the list of potential new nicknames down to just 15, as the school replaces their controversial Fighting Sioux moniker.
Nearly 1,200 names were submitted by the public, and the 15 remaining will be cut down even further before a public vote.
The original list of nicknames included suggestions like "Barn Cats," ''Flying Monkeys" and "Sugar Beatles."

Now, the only remaining contenders are:
- Blaze
- Cavalry
- Explorers
- Fighting Green
- Fighting Hawks
- Force
- Green Hawks
- Nodaks
- North Dakota
- North Stars
- Pride
- Roughriders
- Spirit
- Sundogs
- Thunder Hawks
(Note, the University could choose to just keep going by North Dakota instead of picking a nickname.)
Some of the more popular nicknames that got excluded from contention were Flickertails, Warhawks and Aviators.
