MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — An alert neighbor helped three adults and three dogs escape a house fire in Golden Valley early Saturday morning.

Crews were called to a home on the 5300 block of Culver Road just before 3:30 a.m. after a neighbor noticed black smoke pouring from the two-door garage next door.

The fire departments of Golden Valley, Robbinsdale and St. Louis Park helped fight the fire, which was contained to the garage and a section of the home’s attic.

Two cats and several birds died from smoke inhalation, but no one else was injured, including the rescued dogs.

The house sustained smoke and water damage. The Golden Valley Fire Department is investigating.
