Charleston Massacre Renews Calls To Rename Lake Calhoun
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Provoked because of the horror in Charelston, some people here in Minnesota are petitioning to change the name of a popular Minneapolis lake.
A petition has been created on the website Change.org calling for the Minneapolis Park Board to rename Lake Calhoun.
The lake was named after John C. Calhoun, a U.S. Senator from South Carolina, who also served as vice president and secretary of war. Calhoun was known as a supporter of slavery.
Because of that, the petition says "His name and legacy should not be honored anywhere."
So far, the petition has gotten nearly 400 signatures.
