Strong Storms, Winds Move Across Minnesota

MINNEAPOLIS (AP/WCCO) — Severe thunderstorms swept through southern Minnesota, bringing hail and high winds that downed trees and damaged buildings.

"Much of the wind damage was the result not of the storms themselves but from intense winds behind the storm complex," WCCO meteorologist Lauren Casey said.

Casey said that the highest recorded wind gusts were 76 mph in Jackson, and 74 mph in Worthington. Both gusts would be considered hurricane force.

There was also some flash flooding in parts of the state, following strong and steady rainfall. Heavy rain forced the closure of Interstate 90 in Austin for a short period of time Monday morning.

There were reports of some downed trees and a roof being ripped off a home in Fairmont. In Mahnomen, there was a report of a tipped-over semi-truck and damage to Shooting Star Casino.

There were also reports of felled trees in Albert Lea. In Worthington, the roof was torn off the arena at the Nobles County fairgrounds.

Casey said that ping pong-sized hail was reported in Lakeville.

The severe weather threat had mostly ended for Minnesota by about 9 a.m. Monday. The rest of the day is shaping up to be cool and breezy. Looking ahead, Tuesday is expected to have a high of 81 degrees, with some isolated storms.
