Bite Of Minnesota: Strawberry Wine Slushies

If this beautifully sunny and warm weekend wasn't enough proof that summer is in full effect, then the emergence of strawberry season surely serves as a giant clue from mother nature that summer in Minnesota is here.

Annually I take a trip down to Lorence's Berry Farm in Northfield and load up on strawberries. Starting the second week of June, I obsessively refresh their website multiple times a day looking for the announcement that they are open for picking. Sure enough, this past week kicked off picking season, and I made a trip down on Sunday morning to pick 25 pounds of ripe and juicy berries. I also ate at least a pound while picking. Good thing they don't weigh humans before and after!

Most of our strawberries are destined for the freezer, so it was fitting that I used the last of our frozen strawberries in a smoothie that morning. The rest of the berries are made into desserts like strawberry muffins, roasted strawberry-rhubarb sauce and strawberry pie.

We're headed on a cabin vacation soon and it's always fun to bring a strawberry based adult beverage. In the past I've made strawberry lavender lemonade with vodka or simply infused gin with strawberries to serve with sparkling water. This year I'm breaking out the blender for some strawberry wine slushies! Great for both the kids and adults: just make the kid version first using pineapple juice instead of wine.

Strawberry Wine Slushies

2 cups strawberries
1 cup white wine
2 tbsp sugar (as desired)
3 cups ice

Add all ingredients to a blender and mix. Serve with a straw in insulated mugs to keep the beverage cold.
