DNR Kicks Off Campaign To Deter Drinking And Boating

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is working with other state agencies to deter drinking and boating as summer starts and we approach the Fourth of July.

The DNR said Tuesday it's working with other public safety agencies starting this weekend as part of Operation Dry Water, a national campaign to crack down on drunk boating. The DNR will host an event Wednesday on the St. Croix River along with county sheriff's deputies to show the dangers of boating while intoxicated and the penalties involved for BWI.

Authorities said statistics indicate that alcohol plays a major role in boating accidents and deaths in Minnesota and across the country. Last year, alcohol was involved in six of Minnesota's 14 fatal boating deaths.
