Sheriff: 74-Year-Old Struck By Dump Truck Tire, Killed

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- A 74-year-old Backus man is dead after he was hit by a tire that came off a dump truck last Wednesday, according to the Cass County Sheriff's Office.

According to Sheriff Tom Burch, the sheriff's office received a medical assistance call on June 17 at 10:22 a.m. at a residence in the Backus area.

The victim, identified as Charles Linn, was taken to the St. Cloud Hospital, where he died. Investigators determined that he was struck at the end of his driveway by a tire that came off a dump truck.

Linn was remembered as a kind and caring man who put his family, friends and church above all else. The retired teacher was looking forward to celebrating his 50th wedding anniversary this summer.

"He was so giving and he was always out to help everyone else," neighbor Gretta Norton said.

The driver of the dump truck, identified as 72-year-old Bruce Eveland of Backus, was uninjured in the incident and was unaware that the tire had come off.

The incident is still under investigation.
