Sheriff: Man, Daughter Hit By Lightning In Northern Minnesota

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- A 51-year-old man and his 4-year-old daughter were hospitalized Sunday afternoon after being hit by lightning in northern Minnesota, according to the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office.

Authorities received a report at about 2 p.m. that a parent and child had been struck by lightning while attending a baseball game near the Cherry Township Town Hall recreational facility. Cherry Township is located about 10 miles east of Hibbing.

When officers arrived, witnesses said the father, identified as Jay Mott of Virginia, was carrying his daughter when they were struck by lightning. He was revived at the scene by bystanders who started CPR. His daughter was transported by ambulance to a hospital in Duluth.

He was transported to a hospital in Hibbing before being transferred to the Duluth hospital. Authorities said he is listed in critical condition, while his daughter suffered much less serious injuries.

The St. Louis County Sheriff's Office was assisted at the scene by Cherry Township Fire and First Responders, the Virginia Fire Department Ambulance Service, Hibbing Fire Department Ambulance Service and the Minnesota State Patrol.
