Reports Show History Of Abuse Before Toddler's Death

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Child protection reports show a history of abuse and neglect allegations in the case of Sophia O'Neill, the 2-year-old who was kicked and stomped to death last month in St. Paul.

In October of 2014, Sophia's mom, Sunshine Smith, was arrested for DWI, and her daughter was with her at the time.

The case was closed after Smith completed the requirements of her probation.

Then four months later a report was filed that claimed Smith's boyfriend, Cody Feran-Baum, had hit Sophia and left a bruise on her cheek.

The case was closed after a Child Protection worker reported seeing no bruise on Sophia.

Four months after that, Sophia was taken to the Hennepin County Medical Center, where she died.

Police say Baum, 17, admitted to kicking her twice and stomping on her back.

He's been charged in her death and will be in court next week.
