MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – We’re working for the weekend, and not just any weekend but the Fourth of July weekend! That means there are a ton of events around town to celebrate the holiday.

Head to St. Paul for a picnic!

Saturday will be a great day to grab your picnic blanket and join Garrison Keillor on the Great Lawn of Macalester College. Keillor returns to host a live Independence Day broadcast of “A Prairie Home Companion.” This is the 41st anniversary of the broadcast. Show time is 4:45 p.m. and tickets start at $20.

This weekend is the 35th annual Hmong Freedom Celebration & Sports Festival in Como Park.

Known as “J4,” this family-friendly event offers exciting sports action, musical performances and lots of delicious food. Admission is $5.

The National Senior Games are coming to the Twin Cities.

Nearly 10,000 competitors, ages 50 and older, come from every state in the country to compete in 19 different sports. There also will be an appearance of an Olympic-style torch at the St. Paul Saints game Friday. Attendance at all competitions is free.

Not a senior but need a little workout?

Start your Fourth of July off with a bang by participating in the 38th annual Excelsior Firecracker Run. Enjoy scenic terrain that includes views of historic downtown Excelsior and Lake Minnetonka. The 1-Mile Fun Run begins at 8:10 a.m. and the 5k and 10k races begin at 8:30 a.m.

And, of course, no one does Fourth of July better than Minnesota with countless parades and fireworks displays.
