DNR: Morrison County Lake Infested With Zebra Mussels

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – The Department of Natural Resources says zebra mussels have been found for the first time in a lake in Morrison County.

The DNR announced Monday that the invasive species was confirmed in Fish Trap Lake last week. The lake, which is located near Motley, is now designated as infested.

Officials say zebra mussels were first reported in the lake on June 30. A DNR survey of the waters last Thursday then found the lake to have an established population of adult zebra mussels. As such, the lake will not be considered for treatment.

Christine Jurek, a DNR invasive species specialist, says this new infestation underscores the need for anglers and boaters to be obey the state's anti-invasive species laws.

"Boaters and anglers need to be extra vigilant in ensuring their boat and equipment are clean before leaving a lake access, and to contact the DNR right away if they find suspicious aquatic animals or plants," she said in a statement.
