Accomplish With Kylie: Twin Cities Mobile Market

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – There are parts around the Twin Cities that don't have access to healthy, fresh food on a regular basis. That's why one Metro Transit bus was converted to a healthy grocery store on wheels.

It's called the Twin Cities Mobile Market and even though it's only been around for about six months, it's rolling out some big news.

The Hubbs Learning Center is one of their most popular stops.

"We have lots of different customers that come through when they're done with class," Leah Driscoll, who started the Twin Cities Mobile Market, said. "We had one woman who said it was the first time she had been able to buy fruit in two years."

That's exactly why Driscoll started the Twin Cities Mobile Market last year.

"Our goal is to serve areas where people may not have ready access to healthy food," Driscoll said.

So each week Driscoll and her volunteers bring the bus to 19 stops around St. Paul.

"The volunteer experience can be bagging groceries, which we always need help with," Driscoll said. "We have a long line of customers so helping customers find different items. It's kind of amazing we've just been operating for six months and clearly the demand is much bigger than we can handle."

So, the Twin Cities Mobile Market is adding another bus.

"We're going to be going into Minneapolis and other areas that we just haven't had the capacity to serve so far," Driscoll said.

Since the Mobile Market keeps all their prices affordable, well below market value, they're raising the money to get their next bus rolling.

A donor is matching the money they raise up to $20,000. They're hoping to raise an addition $5,000 to offset the cost of new tires.  Their fundraising goes through July 17.
