Second Man Pleads Guilty In 2013 Robbery, Murder Of Folk Dancer

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- A 24-year-old St. Louis Park man pleaded guilty Thursday to second-degree murder in 2013 death of a well-known dancer during a robbery.

Andrew Mercelis Myers pleaded guilty in the death of 44-year-old Adrian Hernandez, a popular Mexican folk dancer. Myers is the second suspect to plead guilty in the case. Vereice Dshon Washington, 22 of Brooklyn Center, pleaded guilty last December to second-degree murder.

Hernandez formed the group called Mexico Lindo and was a well-known folk dancer in the Latino community. According to court documents, Washington saw Hernandez at 2:30 a.m. on Aug. 22, 2013, at the intersection of Fifth Street and Hennepin Avenue in Minneapolis. Washington asked to borrow Hernandez's cell phone, but Hernandez refused.

Washington followed Hernandez along Hennepin Avenue and was soon followed by Myers and another man. The three men talked about attempting to rob Hernandez. When they got to the intersection of 10th Street and Hennepin Avenue, one of the men punched Hernandez in the face, causing him to hit his head on the concrete.

Washington went into his pockets, stole his cell phone and the three men fled the area. Washington was charged in the case in 2013, and Myers was charged earlier this year while in prison in connection with another robbery.

Both men will be sentenced in the fall.
