DNR: Lake Vermilion Infested With Spiny Waterflea

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – The Department of Natural Resources says Lake Vermilion, one of Minnesota's most scenic lakes, is infested with spiny waterflea.

Officials say anglers reported the presence of the invasive species to conservation officers, who confirmed that the small crustaceans are in the lake.

The DNR says the waterfleas disrupt the food chain in Minnesota lakes. They compete with small fish for food, and because of their spiky tail, bigger fish don't eat them.

They also reproduce quickly, and their eggs are hardy, able to withstand Minnesota's winters.

The DNR is cautioning boaters and anglers to be careful not to spread the waterflea to other lakes.
