Goin' To The Lake Recap: Red Wing (Day 2)

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- WCCO's Goin' to the Lake series of roadtrips headed into bluff country this week, with Frank Vascellaro, Natalie Nyhus and Dave Lee broadcasting as the town celebrates its yearly festival: River City Days.

(If you missed what they did their first day there, click here for the day one recap. Big boots, fine brews and impressive sculptures marked their arrival into the historic city.)

At Bay Point Park, the festival of food, arts, music and games goes all weekend. It's always held the first weekend of August.

The Madd Company Band performed at 5:30 p.m. in a shadows of the historic St. James Hotel, where Dave Lee broadcasted Friday morning. The hotel is a piece of history, built in 1875 and still going strong.

There's a passionate following in Red Wing for catfishing. No, it's not that kind of "catfishing." In this case, we're talking real catfish. And you have the best luck heading out onto the river in the middle of the night. That's what Natalie and Frank did with the help of Captain Brian Klawitter.

It was a full moon, and a little scary for Natalie, but they caught a fish around 1 a.m.

Red Wing is nestled among the Mississippi River bluffs, which makes it a superior destination for hiking.

Barn Bluff, a famous landmark in Red Wing, has several trail options, from difficult to easy.

Another point of interest is the Kiwanis stairway, a 450-step concrete stairway created in 1929 to allow easier access to the top of the bluff.

The St. James Hotel is offering rental bikes for the first time this year.

It costs $25 for four hours, and you don't have to be a guest of the hotel to rent a bike.

The Cannon River Valley trail is a paved trail you can pick up just behind the hotel.
